3/26-3/30- Standardized testing
4/4-4/9 - Easter Break
4/13 - 8:45 LS Gym- Garola's Class Chapel Program
This week is standardized testing. Please be sure that your child gets adequate rest and a healthy breakfast to ensure that they will be ready to focus on the test. Students may bring sugar free gum or peppermint candies during testing. Some students actually focus better if they are chewing or sucking on something. (I will tell them that the gum/candy will be gone if I see a bubble or hear a pop!) They may also bring one healthy snack and a water bottle. NO NUT cards may be used this week! Please arrive at school on time and do not schedule any appointments during testing mornings. We will not have any homework, or spelling words. This will allow the students to focus on the test while they are at school and have free time when they get home!
I know they will do very well on the test!
After testing each day we'll have our regular lunch and reading time. We will rotate through Language, Science, Math, and Writing. We should be able to Math each day and every other subject once or twice. We'll also have a craft, snack, or game for several of the afternoons this week.
As you can see above, we will be performing a class chapel program on April 13th. Because our 5th grade Bible curriculum is the Old Testament, I have purchased a very cute play called, "Old Testament Rewind." It's the entire Old Testament in 30 minutes. I've found with 20 5th graders acting it out, it's more like 45 minutes. We won't need costumes for the program. It's designed to be fast paced and most students have multiple lines and roles. We will need several props. I'm working on creating a list of things that we will need. Once you receive that, if you would check your closets and let us borrow whatever you might have, we'll get it back to you after the program. The students do have multiple lines. I'm really encouraging them to try to memorize their lines so that they won't need scripts in hand. We'll see how they do, if we have to, we'll read the lines. We will also be practicing this in the upcoming weeks. The students have really enjoyed this so far! It's funny, but it's such a great reinforcement lesson on how God remained faithful to his people time and time again throughout the Old Testament. Please put it the date on your calendars and try to attend! You don't want to miss this!
What we'll be working on this week:
Language- We'll be reviewing and finishing up Chapter 4 on pronouns
Math- We'll continue on with lessons 9-10 and 9-11.
Writing- We will be practicing more on writing dialogue correctly. The students have used magazines to create some very cute dialogue cartoons.
Science - We've finished chapter 2A. It's a very short chapter with only 3 lessons. We had a pop quiz last week and they did very well. I really want to move on to Social Studies this week, so I'm going to give the students an open book/ open notes Science test on Tuesday. This way they won't really need to study and we can move on.
Social Studies- In Social Studies this week we'll begin studying World War II. I have a study guide outline for the chapter that the students will fill out as we go. This week I'll introduce the chapter and we'll discuss what lead up to the war.
Bible- We'll work on our chapel program for Bible this week. We will not have a Bible verse.
Spelling/Vocabulary- No test this week
Reading- This week we'll begin meeting in our fourth quarter reading groups. Your student will change reading teachers for 4th quarter. All of the reading groups will be using different books, but participating in a "survivor" style game this quarter. The students will be divided into tribes and competing to earn points and win challenges. My group will be reading Gary Paulsen's novel, Hatchet. I think the students will really enjoy reading this quarter!
